Earlier this month, Amazon announced the successor of their cheapest Alexa powered echo device, that will seemingly be the most popular this holiday season. Last week, I spent some time with this new 3rd generation echo dot and here are my thoughts.
The new echo dot has a visually beautiful design with a fabric cover (no need to buy an additional fabric dot case) and rounded corners. In my opinion, it looks way better than the previous echo dot and will compliment most people’s interior. The new model comes in three colors: Charcoal, Heather Grey, and Sandstone. Also, the new dot has a more prominent speaker with better sound quality.
Amazon reduced the number of microphones in the new dot to four, compared to the seven in the older model. I don’t think it will create any problem while talking to Alexa because I did not feel any notable issue in my brief time. This year Amazon is allowing everyone to pair two echo devices in the stereo setup. Also, an echo sub (sold separately) can be used for a 2.1 system.
So should you buy one? If you are looking for a new budget-friendly smart speaker, then the answer is definitely yes. If you have a previous generation echo dot, then I would suggest buying only if you really want to pair multiple echo devices in a stereo setup.
